Building A Garden Bed Over Grass

Once you've decided where to build a new garden bed, mark the plot's perimeter. Then just place mulch right over the top of the cardboard.

When you put a foot or more of soil over grass, the grass dies, and eventually it becomes part of the soil.

It will hold the cardboard in place. I had raised beds built for veggies but didn't put down any hardware mesh, and i never could get a crop from any root crops.

If building over an existing garden bed or soil, no additional preparation is required. One way to do this is to smother the grass with cardboard or plastic and then pile up the soil in your raised bed to a depth of at least 12 inches (30 centimeters). When i lay a new garden bed, i always dig underneath the old grass and flip it over, upside down.
